3 deacons, 1 priest to be ordained
WESTERN CATHOLIC REPORTER
EDMONTON — Things seem to be improving on the vocations front. At least four new priests for the Edmonton Archdiocese could be ordained within the next year.
"I'm very pleased; it's a good start," said Father Sylvain Casavant, director of vocations for the archdiocese.
"I think it means people are trying to be attentive to God's word and being attentive to what God is calling them to do with their lives."
Throughout May and June three seminarians will be ordained to the diaconate and one will be ordained a priest. The diaconate is the last step before a seminarian is ordained a priest.
Casavant is optimistic because he has seen worse. He was the only priest ordained in the Edmonton Archdiocese between the early and mid-1990s.
"I was ordained in 1992 and the next ordination came four years later," he laughed. Since 1996, the archdiocese has ordained five more priests.
"Things are better today but I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's smooth riding now," Casavant said. "But I would say we have to continue to pray to ask God to send more labourers into his harvest."
The current wave of ordinations is headed by seminarian Paul Kavanagh, who was ordained to the diaconate at Sherwood Park's Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish May 23. He will be followed by Jan Sobkowicz, slated to be ordained a priest at St. Joseph's Basilica June 4 at 7:30 p.m. Sobkowicz is currently serving at Red Deer's Sacred Heart Parish.
On June 5 at 7:30 p.m., seminarian Michael Mireau will be ordained a deacon at Good Shepherd Parish in Edmonton.
Less than three weeks later, on June 28 at 7:30 p.m., Joselito Cantal will be ordained a deacon at St. Theresa Parish.
Casavant said the ordinations are open to the public and he would like as many people as possible to attend them.
When the deacons will be ordained priests depends on several factors, including where they are in their studies. However, Casavant says all may become priests "probably within a year."
The four being ordained are among 10 seminarians studying to become priests for the Edmonton Archdiocese.
