Calgary parish hosts fun fair

MARK WIEBE
SPECIAL TO THE WCR

CALGARY — Hundreds of children and their parents from three Catholic schools and a Lutheran parish took part in a family fun celebration in the gymnasium of their joint ecumenical facility May 6.

Participants bowled, tossed hoops, counted candy-filled jars, raced peanuts with their noses along the floor, face painted, and finally stuffed their happy faces with hot dogs, chips and popcorn prepared by the Knights of Columbus.

Ascension Parish is part of an ecumenical facility with Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in north Calgary.

As well as children from Mount Calvary, Catholic kids from the three schools in Ascension Parish, St. Bede Elementary, Msgr. Neville Anderson Elementary and Ascension of Our Lord Elementary/Junior High took part in the event.

The Fun Fair was the brainchild of Ascension Parish night secretary, Sarah Esposito, who worked with parish council member Pierrette Wiebe to organize the event.

Schools, ministries and clubs set up fun and game booths in the church gym and schools, families and businesses provided prizes. Donations for prizes topped $600.

Ascension Pastor Father Ignatius Thu Tran and associate pastor Father Rustico Recepcion played an active role in many of the games.
