Foremost youth honoured for community contribution
SPECIAL TO THE WCR
EDMONTON — Layne Seward of Foremost is the winner of the third annual Elsie Alexander $1,000 Pro-Life Scholarship. Now a biological science student at the University of Lethbridge, Seward has shown leadership in sports, community and Church activities. A brown belt in judo, Seward has taught judo to children, has served as a lifeguard, taught swimming lessons, coached hockey, and served on the executive of the fish and game club. He was awarded the most sportsmanlike award and the players' player award in hockey. Seward also delivered Meals on Wheels to senior citizens in his community and helps them with chores, including shoveling snow. In his parish, he takes part in the Sunday liturgy as an usher and gift-bearer. "He strives to do and be the best that he can in each and everything that he encounters in life," says his former high school mathematics teacher. "Layne's enthusiasm for life is evident in the way he interacts with each and everything that comes his way." Seward received the scholarship from Elsie Alexander at the Lethbridge and District Pro-Life and Taber Pro-Life dessert night Nov. 1 in Lethbridge. The scholarship was named after Alexander, one of the founding members of Lethbridge Pro-Life who has served on the board and in many capacities of the organization since it was founded in the 1970s. It is awarded annually to a qualifying Grade 12 graduate in the Lethbridge area who has demonstrated respect for life in their home, church, school and community. |
