Collin Millang, a master of divinity student at Newman Theological College, has been named the Alberta SPCA Farmer of the Year. Millang raises pigs and chickens and credits his husbandry methods to his theological studies. Millang was the subject of a profile in the WCR in April which described how he totally changed his farming methods after witnessing the suffering of his animals and reflecting on Christian stewardship of the land.
The Millangs added windows to their barn and enlarged the pens so their pigs had room to roam and interact with other pigs. The chickens also have more room to move and do their pecking outdoors. The family also uses more natural products in their animals' feed and has cut back on the use of chemical antibiotics. Millang, who is studying for the Lutheran ministry, received the SPCA award Oct. 14 in Edmonton. Sisters of Charity re-elected
Two Western Canadian members of the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis have been re-elected to leading international positions in their order. Sister Geraldine Hagel has been chosen as general administrator and Sister Bernadette Gaetz is general councillor. An international gathering of the order was held in August in Vannes, France, with representatives from nine countries.
During the meeting, pilgrimages took place to each of the foundation houses where the charism of the foundress, Mother St. Louise Mol‚, was lived out in providing shelter and education for women and children impoverished by the French Revolution. Sisters launch fundraising group
The Sisters of Charity-Halifax have launched a committee to raise funds for the order's activities in Western and Central Canada. Co-chaired by prominent educator Loretta Foley and Sister Marcella Ryan, the group will be called the Sisters of Charity Advancement Board, Central/Western Canada Committee. The program also aims to raise awareness of the sisters'works and mission. The diverse ministries of today's sisters came out of their traditional focus on education health care and social service. Today, the order has more than 700 sisters with 356 in Canada, including more than 60 in Western and Central Canada. For more information, phone 902-457-3500 (local 318) or visit the order's website, www.schalifax.ca.
