Francophone students celebrate jubilee Mass

More than 1,000 francophone students gathered at the Lac Ste. Anne Shrine on May 31, the feast of the Visitation, to celebrate a jubilee Mass with Archbishop Thomas Collins.

Collins encouraged the students to celebrate the 2,000 years since the birth of Christ by recognizing that "he is life, he is the way and he is the truth."

Teacher and one of the Mass organizers, Suzanne Foisy-Moquin, hopes the students will celebrate the year by building on their faith.

"The message we want to give them today is that Jesus is their friend and he wishes to be central in their lives," she said. "A lot of our students don't have a personal relationship with Jesus."

Seven schools from Le Conseil scolaire du Centre-Nord, the francophone school district, attended the Mass.

The Mass and pilgrimage to the shrine were new for some students, many of whom do not attend regular Sunday Mass, said Foisy-Moquin.

It was also a culmination of jubilee preparations the students had been involved in since the beginning of the school year. Each school had prepared holy doors, learned prayers and discussed various jubilee themes.

Concelebrating the Mass with Collins were Fathers Rene Belanger, Tom Bilodeau, David Brabant, Clement Gauthier, Wieslaw Nazaruk and Raymond Sevigny.
