Last Updated: Friday - 09/24/2010Week of June 12, 2000CWL convention briefsLeague offers mentors to youthThe Alberta-Mackenzie Catholic Women's League is beginning a mentoring program for young people. Beginning with a pilot project, about 200 young people, especially those who are pregnant, young mothers or with medical needs, will be identified to receive personal and spiritual support from CWL members across Alberta and the Northwest Territories."There are so many young people, particularly First Nation and Metis communities who are living in poverty," says CWL president Lucille Partington. "Our organization has supported the government in their efforts to eradicate poverty but it has continued to grow as a social and economic problem in Canada." Stories set up models of faithThe Catholic Women's League is starting an audio and videotape history collection of "models of faith" from throughout Alberta and the Northwest Territories. The stories will be used to mentor young women, it was announced at the league's annual regional convention in Calgary. The league will begin its models of faith collection with Elsie Yanik after whom the CWL names its highest award. A former trapper, Yanik lives in Fort Chipewyan where she has been assigned by the bishop to look after the Catholic church there, including baptisms, marriages and burials. Next convention in Grande PrairieThe Catholic Women's League regional convention is heading north next year and will feature a country-living theme. The Alberta Mackenzie Council's 54th provincial convention will be held in Grande Prairie June 1-3, 2001. Organizers say that despite the convention's urban setting, it will be put on by the rural councils in the area. "The hospitality suite will be open 24 hours a day," promised CWL provincial president Lucille Partington, who comes from Sexsmith. Calgary prepares for 2001 nationalStart practising your "yahoos" for the national Catholic Women's League convention in Calgary next year. Organizers are giving the 2001 event a Stampede flavour. Calgary members are already selling western-style souvenirs - with pins and bolo ties featuring a white cowboy hat, emblazoned with the words CWL and a pink Alberta wild rose. They plan to take the Stampede spirit to this year's convention in Prince Edward Island. The Calgary convention will be held at the Coast Plaza Hotel Aug. 11-15, 2001. Organizers have been meeting for two years already. Organizational costs are being covered by a $6 per person levy for members across southern Alberta. As well, councils elsewhere have raised about $3,000 to cover costs. Already, a western theme song has been written. Members at this year's provincial convention in Calgary sang a round: "So say Yahoo (YA HOO)/It's the Calgary way (YA HOO)/So say Yahoo (YA HOO)/Join us and say (YA HOO)." |
