Portuguese parish celebrates former pastor's anniversary
By ANH HOANG WCR Staff Writer Edmonton
Even after being away in Mexico for the past six years, Father Antonio Tapparello has not become just a memory in the Portuguese Catholic community.
"He was such a nice nice priest," said parishioner Gloria Mendes. "Everyone in the community still remembers him."
More than 400 people remembered him enough to gather at Our Lady of Fatima Church Oct. 23 to celebrate Tapparello's 25th anniversary as a priest.
"He always had a smile for everyone," said Mendes, who also credits Tapparello for helping the Portugese community build a church.
Tapparello has spent the past six years in Mexico teaching young seminarians.
His airfare was paid for by the $800 the parish raised from a bake sale.
