Sister honoured for health care work

Special to the WCR
Edmonton

The annual recognition award of the Catholic Health Association of Alberta and Affiliates was awarded to Sister Mary Ellen O'Neill of the Sisters of Charity Notre Dame d'Evron by Archbishop Thomas Collins at the CHAAA convention Sept. 30.

Sister Mary Ellen is well known throughout the Catholic/Christian system of health care because of her many years of extensive involvement.

She remains actively involved serving on the boards of Bonnyville Health Centre, St. Joseph's Hospital, Vegreville, and St. Mary's Health Centre, Trochu, as well as currently serving a second term as provincial superior of her order.

The archbishop, in presenting the award, cited many of O'Neill's activities and achievements over the years and thanked her on behalf of the association for her life long commitment to Catholic/Christian health care in Alberta.

O'Neill in her acceptance remarks, spoke of the pioneering men and women from various denominations who founded many of the health care institutions in the province and who carved out "a place for all of us to carry on the tradition of healing in Christ's name."

She stressed her belief that those who are part of this association and the health facilities it represents make a difference in the lives of the people we care for. Our world is a better place because of our healing mission and our presence.

O'Neill is the 15th recipient of the award. It aims to give public recognition to those who have made an outstanding contribution to Catholic/Christian health care in Alberta.
