Mount St. Francis marks 50 years
By WARREN HARBECK Special to the WCR Cochrane
A landmark that has made the name of Cochrane synonymous with quietness and contemplation celebrated its 50th anniversary Aug. 22 with a call for universal love.
"Our faith is not just about loving God and our neighbours; love must encompass all of creation," said Calgary Bishop Fred Henry in a talk at the Mount St. Francis Retreat Centre.
Speaking to 600 guests embraced by mountain panorama, floral artistry, flitting birds, gentle breeze, and Brother Sun, Henry said, "St. Francis . . . understood what the stewardship of all of creation was about. Every creature for St. Francis was a mirror of God's presence."
Named after the 13th century Italian saint, Francis of Assisi, who renounced material wealth for the sake of spiritual riches, the centre has been a popular destination for many since its founding in 1949.
This year's Franciscan team of Bob Mitchell, Dave Crosbie, and Kristoph Franz and Mariette Dobrowolski are facilitating individual and group retreats along the theme, Potter's Touch: Beauty Refashioned.
