Pope evokes Polish martyrs:
On the first leg of a 13-day pilgrimage to Poland, Pope John Paul said the spiritual guidance of the country's martyr saints is essential in the country's new era of economic progress. The pope said Poland's past spiritual models are especially relevant in a world that needs people motivated by Gospel values and not just material happiness.
Commons backs traditional marriage:
The Liberal government surprised many members of Parliament by throwing its support behind a Reform Party motion affirming marriage as a union between a man and a woman. A lengthy debate in the House of Commons ended late June 8 with 216 MPs voting for the motion and 55, including the two openly homosexual MPs, opposed.
No marriage for gay couples, says pope:
Relationships between non-married pairs never should have the legal status of matrimony, Pope John Paul said. In a June 4 address to the Pontifical Council for the Family, the pope said calling homosexual couples "married" distorts the concept of the family.
Cardinal wants full story on Kosovo bombing:
Cardinal John O'Connor of New York says Americans may not be getting the full story on Kosovo-related bombing, or that the officials in charge may not themselves have a clear strategy. In his June 3 column in Catholic New York, the cardinal said it appears Americans are "being kept almost completely in the dark about whatever may be our real objectives, strategies and tactics."
