Last Updated: Friday - 09/24/2010Week of June 14, 1999Greetings from new archbishop
June 7, 1999To the People of God of the Archdiocese of EdmontonToday Pope John Paul II has accepted the resignation of Archbishop MacNeil, and I have become the archbishop of Edmonton. There will be a liturgical ceremony of installation at the celebration of the Eucharist at St. Joseph's Basilica on Sept. 13, the feast of Saint John Chrysostom. On behalf of all the people of the archdiocese I thank Archbishop MacNeil for his devoted pastoral ministry, and wish him a most blessed and joyful retirement. As I begin this ministry as your bishop, I ask you to keep me in your prayers, as you are each day in mine. We are fast approaching the Great Jubilee. Two thousand years into our journey of faith, we are guided by the words our Lord quoted from the prophet Isaiah: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord." This is the spirit in which our archdiocese is called to enter the new millennium. May our Lord bless you always, Thomas CollinsArchbishop of Edmonton |
