Pope pushes for Kosovo peace:

Visiting a hospital on Italy's Adriatic shore, Pope John Paul denounced the damage NATO bombing has caused to hospitals across the sea in Yugoslavia. "How can we not remember those persons at the mercy of war who need care?" the pope asked May 30 during a visit to Ancona's regional hospital. Meanwhile, a Bosnian bishop voiced deep concern over NATO's actions, saying the bombings run the risk of becoming a pointless exercise in violence. With the NATO bombs falling on Kosovars as well as Serbs, he said, "aren't the consequences also being paid by those who were supposed to be protected?" said Auxiliary Bishop Pero Sudar of Sarajevo.

Debate over family to heat up:

The debate over the traditional family could heat up in the fall if the federal government as expected introduces an omnibus bill to change dozens of laws to provide equal benefits to same-sex partners. Canada's Catholic bishops say equating homosexual partners with married and common-law couples could lead to a redefinition of marriage.

Cardinals query bishops' 'promotions':

Two Vatican cardinals, voicing concern over episcopal "career climbing," have proposed that bishops remain in the original diocese to which they are named, with rare exceptions. The policy would help remove expectations of promotion to more important dioceses and would return to an earlier Church model, in which the bishop is seen as "wedded" to his flock, said Cardinals Vincenzo Fagiolo and Bernardin Gantin.

Vatican touts new media as way to promote the faith:

A new Vatican document said the Church can transmit its teachings through emerging media such as the Internet, alongside more traditional means like art, schools and the family. But personal contact is more important to pastoral care than the Internet and other mass media, the document's authors said. The paper, Toward a Pastoral Approach to Culture, was released at the Vatican June 1.
