Church seeks end to Kosovo fighting:
Catholic leaders called for an end to the conflict in Yugoslavia and urged assistance for masses of ethnic Albanians from Kosovo seeking refuge in neighbouring countries. The Vatican has waged an intense diplomatic effort to stop the fighting or to at least bring about a ceasefire in the week between the Western and Eastern celebrations of Easter (April 4-11).
Gov't backs down on postal subsidy:
Catholic newspaper editors are heaving a collective sigh of relief after Heritage Canada backed down on its plan to make them publish more original material. Chris McDermott, manager of the department's Publications Assistance Program, has told Catholic editors whose postal subsidies were threatened that the content of their newspapers does meet program guidelines.
Residential school lawsuits could drain Church resources:
The hundreds of civil lawsuits filed by former Indian residential school students could cost the Catholic Church in Canada millions of dollars down the road. "The scenario of buildings being sold or dioceses going bankrupt is not unrealistic. It's very serious," said Gerry Kelly, the Church official coordinating reconciliation efforts with aboriginal people.
U.S. bishops seek end to capital punishment:
The U.S. bishops have urged all people of good will to preach, teach, pray and serve as witnesses against the "tragic illusion" of the death penalty. In a Good Friday statement, the bishops said, "We oppose capital punishment not just for what it does to those guilty of horrible crimes but for what it does to all of us as a society."
