Pope seeks Kosovo peace:
With NATO accelerating air strikes against Serb forces in Yugoslavia, Pope John Paul has stepped up his appeals for peace and a return to dialogue. He also sent Archbishop Paul Cordes, a top Vatican relief official, to visit refugee camps in Albania and deliver a personal contribution of US$50,000 toward their assistance.
Abortion pill draws flak from bishops:
The Canadian bishops are again making it clear they don't want the federal government to allow the abortion-inducing pill RU-486 introduced to Canada. "This pill is not a therapeutic drug but one which destroys the unborn child and has serious health risks for women," said Archbishop Adam Exner, in a March 26 letter to Health Minister Allan Rock.
Priests called to be teachers of prayer:
Today's priests must teach the faithful how to pray and to experience God's fatherly love, Pope John Paul said. Because of the ordained priest's "indissoluble bond linking him to the priesthood of Christ, the priest is the teacher of prayer," the pope said in his Holy Thursday letter to the world's 404,000 Catholic priests.
