Church council head says justice cannot be equated with punishment:

Tough new federal legislation to replace the Young Offenders Act will fail if justice continues to be equated with punishment, says the Church Council on Justice and Corrections (CCJC). CCJC spokesperson Rick Prashaw said the proposed law should serve as a "wake-up call" to Canadians to learn about the extent of youth crime and the country's "addiction to punishment."

Church tensions high in Bosnia:

Franciscan officials in Italy and a bishop in Bosnia-Herzegovina have formally settled a dispute over parishes, but many local people have not yet accepted the situation. Franciscan Father Stephan Ottenbreit, the order's vicar general, said "it probably will be a long time" before members of the parishes who rebelled against the agreement, some even making threats of violence and occupying their churches, will come to accept it.

Mexican bishops oppose casinos:

The Mexican bishops' conference has criticized a proposed law that would legalize casino gambling in the country. The installation of casinos is "a primary source of corruption," the conference said in a March 10 statement.

Pro-lifers oppose abortion pill:

The Canadian pro-life movement is promising to launch a boycott of any drug company that manufactures the abortion-inducing "death drug" Ä- RU-486. Campaign Life Coalition decried the decision by Health Canada to write to the company assuring it that any application for approval of the drug in Canada would get a fair hearing.
