Pope urges Church in Americas to proclaim Jesus:
Pope John Paul has called for a fresh program of evangelization in the Western Hemisphere, built on conversion to Christ and solidarity with the suffering. Titled The Church in America, the pope's letter to all Catholics in North and South America covered a wide range of issues, from the value of prayer to the relationship between the Church and politics.
U.S. faces 'time of trial,' says pope:
During a 30-hour visit to St. Louis, Pope John Paul told Americans that the United States faces a "time of trial." It must choose, he said, between protecting the weakest members of society or rejecting them as useless.
Charges against Vatican official dropped:
A charge of criminal harassment against a top Vatican envoy in Canada has been dropped due to lack of evidence. Crown attorney Andrejs Berzins said the case against Msgr. Vito Rallo, the Vatican's No. 2 official in Canada, who was charged with stalking a former employee of the papal nunciature, was dropped because the evidence was too weak.
Drop plans to add same-sex benefits, Exner urges:
The Catholic Organization for Life and Family (COLF) has urged the federal government to reconsider plans to make sweeping changes that would confer benefits on same sex partners. In a Jan. 26 letter to Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Vancouver Archbishop Adam Exner said equating homosexual partners with married and common-law couples could lead to a redefinition of marriage.
