Basilica offers candies for kindness
By WCR Staff
Father Len Cadieux thinks Random Acts of Kindness Week is a great way to put the Gospel into action.
And the rector of St. Joseph's Basilica will be urging his parishioners to do just that on the weekend of Feb. 6-7.
Cadieux told the WCR he'll have ushers distribute bags of candy to parishioners when they leave all Masses that weekend. Each bag will contain three candies attached to the slip of paper.
Each slip will suggest some kind act the recipient could perform the following week. Everyone who receives a bag will keep one candy -- and one good deed for him or herself -- and give the other two to friends.
"It will challenge them to take their faith beyond the church doors," he said. "Random acts of kindness are what Christianity is all about. I want to bring it back into the context of the Church."
The rector is spending his evenings these days attaching slips of paper to the candies to fill 3,000 baggies for every person expected to attend Mass that weekend.
He sees it as an important mission. "Little things can make a difference. The fact that you smile at somebody can save their life."
