Pope sees significance in maternal images describing God:
The Old Testament's use of images of maternal love to describe God are "extremely significant," Pope John Paul said Jan. 20. Those images help to show that the closest thing on earth to God's "intense, constant and compassionate love" for his creation is the love of a father or mother for a child, the pope said.
Pope, Clinton to talk ethics:
U.S. President Bill Clinton's fourth meeting with Pope John Paul - an official welcome in St. Louis Jan. 26 - comes at an awkward moment in U.S.-Vatican relations. But strange as it may seem to Americans, the Monica Lewinsky sex scandal was not the main cause of Vatican concern as the pontiff prepared for the meeting. Vatican officials had other things on their minds: among them, the recent bombing of Iraq, the continued embargo of Cuba, the death penalty and abortion.
Curis has the common touch:
Hailed as an austere man who walked with kings and princes and never lost the common touch, papal nuncio Archbishop Carlo Curis leaves Canada at the end of January. Curis, 75, has represented Pope John Paul to the Canadian government and the Church for the past nine years. A successor to Curis is expected to be named by the end of January.
Bishop, nun receive Order of Canada:
A Quebec bishop and a Catholic nun from Nova Scotia were among 89 appointments to the Order of Canada announced Jan. 12 by Gov. Gen. Romeo LeBlanc. Bishop Jean-Guy Couture of Chicoutimi and health care educator Sister Nuala Kenny of Halifax have been named members of the Order of Canada.
