Trinity Western wins court battle:
Archbishop Adam Exner says he hopes the B.C. Court of Appeal's decision in favour of Trinity Western University marks a return to respect for the legitimate rights of Christians in society. In a 2-1 decision, the appeal court ruled Dec. 30 that the B.C. College of Teachers must approve a teacher training program at the evangelical university, based in Langley, B.C.
Pope has message for the Americas:
Twenty years after he inaugurated his travelling papacy with a visit to Mexico, Pope John Paul is returning to the country with a newly honed message on the Gospel's social relevance. The pope is making the Jan. 22-26 trip to unveil his apostolic exhortation on the Synod of Bishops for America, a document addressed to Catholics in North and South America.
Hostage negotiator named prime prelate:
The new head of the Lima Archdiocese, Archbishop Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne, became world famous as a key figure during the 1996-97 hostage crisis at the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima. The Vatican announced Jan. 9 that Pope John Paul named Cipriani to head the archdiocese following the retirement of Cardinal Augusto Vargas Alzamora.
Pope says it's right to call God Father:
The fact that many of the world's great religions describe God as a father points to a reality and not, as some have claimed, to a widespread psychological delusion, Pope John Paul said in his Jan. 13 general audience talk.
