Women's leadership in the Church queried
I find it remarkable that so many people are still determined to exclude women from leadership roles in Christianity.
The article "Split over women bishops sparks exodus" (WCR, July 26) notes interesting statistics regarding the number of Anglicans wanting to join the Catholic Church just because women are allowed to be leaders.
I am curious though. How many Catholics have left our Church over the years to join the Anglicans and other more reasonable Christian groups because of the pope's refusal to treat women as equals?

First Nations pilgrimages deserve attendance
I was pleased to see an article in this week's WCR (Aug. 30) about the Rose Prince pilgrimage, but it would be good to also write about smaller local pilgrimages in First Nations communities.
Two come to mind, that of Holy Mary at Beaver Lake F.N. Reserve and Saint Joseph at Kehiwin F. N. Reserve in St. Paul Diocese. Both are little jewels in their kind, very family and community oriented.
These pilgrimages have taken place yearly for over 70 years. Surrounding parishes should make it a point to encourage attendance. All can benefit from attending our Creator's Church of the great outdoors at these and other pilgrimage sites.

Long form census gives a voice to those in need
In supporting the long form of the census (WCR, Aug. 30), our Canadian bishops deserve our appreciation, not just for their common sense, but most especially for their efforts to give a voice to those in need.
The census gives voice to the needs of the poor in various ways - voices which the powerful constantly seek to silence and hide.
Their letter to Minister Tony Clement repeatedly emphasizes the need for census information to target areas where service is needed.
Unlike the unchristian individualism infecting anti-government and anti-social movements, especially in the U.S. (and apparently now here in Canada within our own government), our bishops have politely but firmly insisted on our social responsibility.
This reflects their fidelity to the deep Catholic tradition of communion and solidarity. Bravo!
