Adoption's options

Mark Pickup's article "Every unborn child is wanted" (WCR, Jan. 23) encouraged me to write.

I am a social worker at Catholic Social Services working with birth parents considering adoption. Birth parents who made adoption plans love their children. They agonize, soul search and grieve the decisions they make. They come to us scared, overwhelmed, confused and many have limited support in their lives.

They have dreams for their child that they often feel unable to provide. They are living the self-sacrificial love that Pope Benedict talks about each and every day.

Our waiting adoptive couples yearn to be parents and are fully committed to open adoption where connection with the birth family is maintained. It is through these life-long connections that children can grow up knowing how incredibly loved they are by their parents who raise them and by the individuals who have brought them into this world.

Open adoption is not for everyone, but my hope is that more birth parents would explore and consider this option. Every child is a miracle to be treasured and cherished.

For more information about this program, contact Catholic Social Services, adoption program. In Edmonton, call 432-1137 and in Red Deer, call 347-8844.

School board's actions challenged

Now that it is public knowledge that the Edmonton Catholic board has a $10-million deficit, maybe someone will listen to me.

It is illegal for any board to have a deficit. The Catholic board admits to knowingly and intentionally going into a deficit of millions.

They are also mystified by further millions in deficit.

They should not be allowed to exist any longer.

The minister of learning has the right and duty to dissolve this board and replace it with a public trustee until a new board is elected.

This is especially true since several months ago I contacted both this board and the minister indicating that I could show this board how to free up millions of dollars without interfering with teacher salaries or the smooth and uninterrupted delivery of services to students.

They wouldn't even talk to me. Shame on them.

If the minister continues to refuse to act, then he should be asked to resign his position and someone who will act for the benefit of the taxpayers should be appointed to the position.

Come on Opposition, do your work too.
