Monarchist bias 'irksome'

I wish to react to your editorial regarding Queen Elizabeth ("Follow Queen Elizabeth's lead, WCR, May 30).

I agree that she is a model for many, always charming and in control when she visits Canada. As to her being responsible and dedicated to her role, she was well trained for it.

You mention that she could have stayed home rather than visit. There is no heroism there. She came because we treat her well and because her loyal subjects are dwindling.

The monarchy is on the decline.

As to her majesty, she is a remarkable lady well respected everywhere. But what does she represent? The British Empire that controlled us for a long time and is still evident. Our soldiers were sent to the front first in the Second World War.

It would have been a nice gesture if she had paid her way (a centennial gift) and helped the natives in Regina as well as the Kids at City Hall.

There is nothing wrong with your editorial sir, except you only showed one side. I taught for many years about the British Empire and the monarchy without bias.

Your editorials are usually interesting and thought provoking. This one is irksome. I think it's time for another step forward in our independence.

Papal residence questioned

I read with interest, the item on Pope Benedict XVI's architect designed home in Pentling, Germany (WCR, June 20).

I am not suggesting that priests should live in squalor, nor am I suggesting that people with religious vocations should not be able to own anything. However, I am sure a single priest could have lived far more modestly.

Now, when one considers the opulence of the pope's new digs at the Vatican, I would have thought this home would have been something he would quickly dispose of, with the funds going towards helping the poor.

I am sure there are many areas where Pope Benedict XVI sets good examples. This is not one of them.
