Fossil fuel debate burns on

Suzanne Elston(WCR, Dec. 6, "Heed this dire weather report") presents claims about the causes of and solutions to global warming as if those claims are scientifically true. She claims that since the 1992 Earth Summit there has been a "global consensus" that global warming is happening and that we are causing it by cutting down rainforests and burning fossil fuels.

First, there is no such consensus among climatologists. It is well known that the UN's IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) executive grossly edited the data given them by their researchers to support the conclusion that global warming is happening and we are causing it. This is the "consensus" that was presented at the Earth Summit - a meeting that was engineered by Maurice Strong whose global government ambitions are also well known.

What better way for a global (UN) government to gain control of the world's economies than by gaining control over the use of the energy that is the lifeblood of those economies? Of course energy use will be governed by Strong et al "for our own good" to prevent global warming.

It is also well known that imposition of the Kyoto accord - which exempts massive greenhouse gas emitters like China and India - will have virtually no effect on any human induced climate change that might actually be happening. The carbon credits market, on the other hand, will be a very effective way of implementing something like an international version of Canada's system of transfer payments from have to have-not provinces.

The Earth Summit, Kyoto, and the IPCC generally are politically motivated, not scientifically motivated. For scientifically sound rebuttals to the junk science behind global warming alarmism check out World Climate Report online:www.co2andclimate.org/index.html.

Second, Elston bemoans the potential "decline of an indigenous way of life" as the Arctic experiences global warming. Again, ACIA's Arctic climate status and projections are based on highly selective data. For a fuller picture of the climatalogical facts go to:www.co2andclimate.org/wca/2004/wca_27b.html.

Ten thousand years ago North America was under ice as far south as the Dakotas. Some kind of global warming occurred to end that Ice Age, and nobody believes the warming was caused by cave man cooking fires. In fact, nobody knows what caused that Ice Age or what caused the global warming that ended it.

A few weeks ago Elston herself authored a WCR column noting the probability that variations in the sun's intensity are likely causing major variations in Earth's climate. But her Dec. 6 column goes back to assuming that the earth's climate wouldn't change it if were not for humans' immoral use of evil fossil fuels.

Life thrives on this planet by adapting to changing conditions. The earth, the sun and the universe as a whole do not exist in a steady state. We live in a dynamic system whose fundamental feature is that it changes.

Neither God nor the universe guarantees that any of us will be able to maintain our "traditional" lifestyle in the face of changing climatic and other conditions that affect how it is possible to live. Lifeforms that adapt live; those that don't adapt can't survive in our changing world.

I am not making any moral statements. I am merely observing that this is the way it works here.

It is not our fault, Ms Elston, that people are affected by changes in local or global climates. So don't believe too firmly in ideologically motivated solutions to "problems" that we didn't cause and can't do anything about in any event.

Christianity said to be serious, demanding

I am writing this in response to the article"Cat helps Mass come alive" (WCR, Dec. 6).

I believe that the people who produce this type of content are, by and large, unaware that it is both dangerous and unsustainable to transform religion into entertainment.

I think that it might be helpful to remind others of what the American cultural critic Neil Postman said in his 1985 book Amusing Ourselves to Death. Postman reminded us that "Christianity is a demanding and serious religion" and that "when it is delivered as easy and amusing, it is another kind of religion altogether."

The primary goal of the "Cat Chat" CDs is to amuse while their secondary goal is catechesis.

This is very dangerous because there is a high probability that children who are catechized by these CDs will associate church with entertainment. It is unrealistic to expect our priests to be entertainers.

The fact is that "Christianity is a demanding and serious religion."

Eventually children who believe it to be otherwise will, undoubtedly, realize that it is not fun or entertaining.

When this happens they will either become disillusioned, or (once they are adults) try to make Church more entertaining. If that happens our religion will become "another kind of religion altogether."

I realize that the ideology which dominates our cultural consciousness is entertainment and that as a result we are often inclined to try to make our religion entertaining. I certainly do not wish to suggest that certain aspects of church cannot be entertaining.

I do, however, wish to warn that we must negotiate our relationship with entertainment carefully so that it does not become the central focus of devotion, or, to put it another way, so that it does not become the god we serve.

'Left-leaning judges' do not represent the majority

Is anyone really surprised at the Dec. 9 Supreme Court ruling to allow gay and lesbian "marriage"?

A close look at the Supreme Court reveals that virtually every judge has been appointed by the left-leaning Liberal government. This includes the two judges recently appointed by Prime Minister Paul Martin, both of whom are well known for homosexual activism in their decisions.

What happens when you stack the Supreme Court with left-leaning judges? You get left-leaning decisions that are not representative of the majority of Canadians.

Common sense instead presides with the majority of Canadians who recognize the obvious biological self-evidence that marriage can never really be anything other than between a man and woman, despite re-definition attempts forced on us by a handful of unelected activist judges.

I for one do not accept their decision, and I think it's time for electoral reform. I am referring to the type that was promised by the current government during the recent election, but that we haven't yet seen.
