WCR Letters to the Editor

Mary, Joseph married before Bethlehem trip

There is a serious mistake on the front cover of the Dec. 17 WCR.

It says that Joseph and Mary were engaged when they travelled to Bethlehem. I don't know what Bible that was taken from.

The Douay-Rheims Holy Catholic Bible says, "To be enrolled with Mary his espoused wife , who was with child" (Luke 2:5).

Also Luke 2:27 - "To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David . . .".

Matthew 1:19-20 - "Whereupon Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing publicly to expose her, was minded to put her away privately. But while he thought on these things, behold the angel of the Lord appeared to him in his sleep, saying: 'Joseph, son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife, for that which is conceived in her, is of the Holy Ghost.'"

When I was in school many years ago, I remember the good sisters telling us that one of the reasons Joseph was given to Mary as a husband was to protect her honour. Things were taught so beautifully and delicately.

I cannot believe that Our Lord would not be very displeased by people dishonouring his immaculate mother by saying she was not married to Joseph when she was with child.

Mary was dishonoured on the front page of a "Catholic" paper, I hope it will be cleared up on the front page.

Editor's Note: The inscription was taken from the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, used in the Canadian Catholic Lectionary.

Mac High students also gave to CSS

After reading the article ''Students dig deep for CSS'' (WCR, Dec 17) where fundraisers such as raffles, 50/50 draws, bake sales, marathon dances, penny lines, school dances, coin collections, and a country fair were listed, I would like to share another fundraising idea.

The students of Archbishop Macdonald High School hold annual charity concerts to benefit local charities throughout our community. Catholic Social Services-Sign of Hope campaign is the beneficiary of our fundraising efforts in 2001.

A group of very talented musicians and singers entertained the students. Students donated $2 each to watch performances by a rock band, a violinist, a pianist, and vocalists. The total amount donated to this very worthy cause was $1,125.

The students had a great time as they had fun and also raised monies for the Sign of Hope campaign.
