WCR Letters to the Editor

Sri Lanka grateful for Holy Childhood

While searching web sites for the Holy Childhood Associations I found an interesting article written by Anh Hoang ("Children reach out to children," WCR, May 15). I noticed that the money collected by those little children in the schools of the Archdiocese of Edmonton, has been dispersed among the poor countries in Asia, South Africa and Latin America.

When I saw Sri Lanka as one of such countries, the feelings I had could not be expressed. That is why I am sending this small note.

I am also sending that message to our national director. All the diocesan directors and the national director meet thrice a year, in different places and share our work with regard to the Holy Childhood and the other activities of the Pontifical Mission Societies.

I will present this to the other diocesan directors at our next meeting in June 21-23, about the children of the schools in the Edmonton Archdiocese who have helped financially for the children's projects in Sri Lanka.

And I will request the diocesan directors to inform all the children in Holy Childhood Associations in their respective dioceses to pray for those children, in the schools of the Edmonton Archdiocese.

I am very happy to inform you that I am one of the diocesan directors for the PMS including Holy Childhood in Sri Lanka.

I belong to the diocese of Ratnapura which is only four years old. My Bishop (Rt. Rev. Dr. Malcolm Ranjith) was the one who started the Holy Childhood Association in Sri Lanka about 13 years ago while he was the national director for the PMS. It has spread in all the dioceses. Even in the war zone area of North and East, Holy Childhood is functioning well.

Henry right on the mark

In the May 22 WCR you published the column "A Shepherd Speaks" by Bishop Fred Henry. The title, very apropos, was "In Defence of the World March."

Questions which have been addressed to the staff of the Development and Peace office were responded to with clarity.

In his article Henry has assisted us to appreciate the scope of endorsements from the Canadian Catholic community and beyond, the historic nature of this grassroots campaign "World March for Women-2000" as well as, clarification regarding some misconceptions surrounding it.

We feel proud that Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace was willing to support this international initiative in its early stages as it calls attention to the injustices that many women throughout the world must cope with on a daily basis.
