The jackboot attack on Dr. Laura
SPECIAL TO THE WCR
As you are probably aware, talk show host, advice columnist, and author Dr. Laura Schlessinger is a "tough-love" advocate of traditional, Judeo-Christian moral standards, and a favourite dartboard target of gays, feminists and social liberals in general.
Recently some gay writers and the producer of the sitcom Frasier, supported by sundry other denizens of the liberal Hollywood establishment, have demanded cancellation of a new TV show featuring Dr. Laura (which reportedly has been picked up on more than 160 TV stations, reaching 90 per cent of American households) and have pressured sponsors to pull out of her radio show.
Even erstwhile Democratic presidential candidate Bill Bradley decided to carpetbag the controversy, declaring that Dr. Laura's "homophobia" justifies her expulsion from the airwaves. Ads have been published in The New York Times calling her "The Queen of Hate Radio."
Ah yes, "hate" and "homophobia," epithets routinely employed by the political correctness jackbooters to chill debate. Unhappily, too many people are intimidated by the slanderous innuendo. Psychological terrorism works all too well.
Indeed, confronted by numerous threats on her life from homosexual activists, and acting on FBI advice, Dr. Laura has cancelled all her speaking engagements indefinitely. "This is the face of 'gay' tolerance," said Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality and editor of CultureFacts. "It's not enough to try to bully Paramount into dropping her upcoming fall TV show. Some are trying to silence Dr. Laura in any venue."
As my learned friend Father Roy Bowler observes, "Physical attacks on a person or a community can be photographed and felt and the screams can be heard and the blood can be seen. Courageous people can resist the attacks and may rout their persecutors. But psychological attacks are in the highest degree insidious. . . . They can only be felt by the enlightened human spirit."
Dr. Laura, a former liberal, is now an Orthodox Jew who stands for just about everything the political correctness fascists revile: she's anti-abortion, believes that unmarried teens (and unmarried adults) should be sexually abstinent, that pregnant teenagers should give up their babies for adoption; that divorce is mostly a bad thing unless the spouse is an abuser, and of course she opposes the social and political agendae of the gay rights movement - heresy of heresies to the political correctness inquisition.
She has told her listeners that homosexuality is a "deviant behaviour" and "a biological disorder," but also insists that homosexuals are "entitled to love and respect," just like everyone else.
Dr. Laura's views on homosexuality and sexual morality in general are neither "fringe" nor "extreme." They are shared by millions of Jews and Christians. Twenty million people tune in to Dr. Laura's radio show, and her books are bestsellers (there's even a Dr. Laura board game). That's partly what gets the gay activists' knickers in a knot.
The National Post's Mark Steyn noted recently that Dr. Laura is "no harder on gays than she is on single moms, cheating husbands, drunken wives, and children who aren't respectful to their grandparents." But no matter; "unfortunately for her, standard Judeo-Christian morality is now, according to those gay guys at Frasier, 'hate speech.'"
This is all quite fascinating. The basic, Judaism-derived, standards, teachings and social mores of the Christian religion that founded, built and sustained Western culture for two millennia have been summarily redefined as "hate speech" by the political correctness fascists, with their cynical and invidious creed of selective "tolerance."
People used to assume that "tolerance" meant live and let live; in the context of this discussion, that whatever two consenting adults wanted to do with each other behind closed doors was a private matter between them. I pretty much subscribe to that. I mean what's the alternative? Sex police raiding people's bedrooms?
However, the political correctness fascists are by no means satisfied with being left alone. They demand positive public approval and acceptance of their sexual deviancies - be they homo or heterosexual, and the right to preach their "gay is OK" message to schoolchildren.
Pity help anyone who gets in the way of their pan-sexualist agenda. As columnist David Frum recently noted, what gays are after is a quite separate set of rights - the right to be exempt from Canada's obscenity laws, Britain's prohibitions on sex in public toilets, etc.
These people aren't interested in real tolerance. Their aim is to purge from public discussion all views on homosexuality that differ from theirs, excluding the possibility of good-faith dissent, and seeking to impose their own brand of orthodoxy on everyone. They are prototypical fascists, who, as Steyn notes, have decided, "instead of trying to persuade people to change their opinions, it's easier just to get them banned."
