Cardinal Keith O'Brien
April 4, 2011
A Scottish cardinal has accused the British government of operating an "anti-Christian foreign policy."
Cardinal Keith O'Brien of St. Andrews and Edinburgh criticized Foreign Secretary William Hague for increasing overseas aid to countries such as Pakistan without demanding greater protection for religious minorities persecuted there.
In a reference to two recent assassinations of Pakistani politicians who had opposed the country's controversial blasphemy laws, O'Brien said that "to increase aid to the Pakistan government when religious freedom is not upheld and those who speak up for religious freedom are gunned down is tantamount to an anti-Christian foreign policy."
