Cardinal Jose Sanchez, who once served as prefect of the Congregation for Clergy at the Vatican, died March 9 in Manila.

He would have turned 92 March 17.

Sanchez was the fifth Filipino to be named a cardinal.

Archbishop Jose Palma of Cebu, president of the Philippines bishops' conference, described Sanchez as a "prelate of passionate love.

He loved God and loved the Church with joy and dedication."

Sanchez left his native Philippines in 1985 after Pope John Paul named him secretary of the Congregation of the Evangelization of Peoples.

From 1991 to 1996, he served as prefect of the Congregation for Clergy.
