INUVIK, N.W.T. — Pictures tell stories. Stories tell us who we are. For 15-year-old Mary Masazumi the story falls into the category of mystery.

Her father Alfred is dead and there are no family photo albums at home in Fort Good Hope that stretch back into her father's childhood. Mary hoped to fill that gap pouring through binders of photos from the archives of the Diocese of Mackenzie-Fort Smith.

Alta. Knights raise $237,000 to renovate building at St. Mary's

CALGARY — Alberta's Knights of Columbus have raised about $237,000 for St. Mary's University College in Calgary.

"It took us a little over three years to raise the money. We had help from knights all over southern Alberta," said Leo Bunz who chaired Knights of Columbus fundraising committee. "We concentrated very heavily on the councils in southern Alberta for their donations."

Newman lays foundation for lay ministry

EDMONTON — A new online-based program and the reintroduction of an old program at Newman Theological College will prepare students for lay ministry.

The bachelor of theology program was intended to give students a basic understanding of theology and religious sciences and provide a foundation for pastoral leadership.

Building things has summed up Walter Domshy's whole life.

The TV cabinet, keyboard stand and most of the furniture within his west Edmonton home were handcrafted by him. He's built merry-go-rounds, sandboxes and seesaws that are still in use at school playgrounds. He also made many useable items, such as the votive candle stand, found at Annunciation Church.

WYD pilgrims begin 'days you will never forget'

MADRID — A cloudless blue sky turned to inky night as hundreds of thousands of pilgrims participated in the opening Mass for World Youth Day, celebrated by Madrid Cardinal Antonio Rouco Varela.

Protected from the heat by white umbrellas and streams of soft mists, dozens of bishops and priests gathered on and around the makeshift altar to celebrate the Mass for pilgrims representing their homeland with flags, special hats, T-shirts and banners.

SKARO — The Virgin Mary offers Christians of every age "a beautiful example of unwavering faith," Msgr. Jack Hamilton said in his homily at the 93rd annual Skaro Pilgrimage.

Mary had "a confident reliance on God no matter how outrageous God's plan might seem at first," Hamilton said. "In this she is truly blessed and so are we."
