WESTERN CATHOLIC REPORTER

Mary Hunt radiates the warmth of a sister, liberally giving hugs and dashing smiles everywhere she goes. Growing up in Calgary, the “cradle Catholic” also demonstrated the commitment of a sister, often hurriedly walking two miles to make it to school for the 9 o’clock bell, after attending the 7 a.m. Mass most days during Lent. As a teenager, she even harboured dreams of being a sister one day, and perhaps becoming a canon lawyer.

As of April 28 more than 4,600 people were known to have been killed with thousands more still missing, feared trapped under the rubble.

WESTERN CATHOLIC REPORTER

The Alberta Knights of Columbus have again rejected casino fundraising by their member councils. At their April 17-19 convention in Red Deer, the order ruled out of order a motion to allow their 170 active councils across Alberta and the Northwest Territories to raise money for charitable causes by working at casinos. "We support our bishops," said state deputy Bill Smith of Calgary. "It violates our constitution to go counter to our bishops."

WESTERN CATHOLIC REPORTER

Many young people look for some sort of sign from God to confirm their life's vocation, especially when it comes to pursuing the priesthood. But for Deacon Michael Uso-Ereyi, no sign was needed at all. This summer, the St. Joseph's seminarian will be ordained as a priest for the Grouard-McLennan Archdiocese in northwestern Alberta – the culmination of a journey which began at his birth in his native country of Nigeria. Growing up in southern Nigeria, a young Uso-Ereyi went to church with his mom every day. He greatly admired the Augustinian missionaries – the religious order which ran his church in Edo State – a congregation whose presence in the West African country stretches back to the late 1500s.

The membership of the LCWR represents more than 80 per cent of the 57,000 women religious in the U.S.

PETRONILA JASA
SPECIAL TO THE WCR

For St. Albert's Holy Family Parish, Divine Mercy Sunday April 12 was the occasion for more than the usual Sunday celebrations. The possessor of a first class relic of St. Faustina Kowalska, who gave the world the message of divine mercy prior to her death in 1938, the parish held a special afternoon period of Eucharistic Adoration, veneration of the relic and Benediction. Since 2007, the parish has had a special commemoration of Divine Mercy Sunday, an event whose prominence was highlighted when it obtained the relic from the Congregation of Our Lady of Mercy in Cracow, Poland in 2012.
