Retired Halifax archbishop dies at 89

Archbishop Emeritus Austin-Emile Burke of Halifax died peacefully on Aug. 12. He was 89.

Ordained a priest in 1950, Burke became bishop of Yarmouth, N.S., where he served for 23 years.

He was archbishop of Halifax from 1991 to 1998.

A native of Sluice Pointe, in Yarmouth County, Burke also served as president of the Atlantic Episcopal Assembly and co-treasurer of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops.
