Despite commercialism, Mother's Day retains its relevance, magic

Dr. Gerry Turcotte

May 27, 2013

Another Mother's Day has come and gone, and it is with quiet marvel that I look back on the occasion. Certainly, like so much else in western culture – from Christmas to Easter to Valentine's Day – the event has been commercialized until you feel not another drop can be wrung out of it. Sales, gifts and wrapping paper.

Our human desire is to project an aura of confidence, of success, of being in control. We want to know it all and to have others believe we know it all.

Celibacy's dance can be dangerous or wonderfully fruitful

Fr. Ron Rolheiser, omi

May 20, 2013

Recently an op-ed piece appeared in the New York Times by Frank Bruni, entitled, "The Wages of Celibacy." The column, while provocative, is fair. Mostly he asks a lot of hard, necessary questions.

It is fitting that the conclusion of our five-year archdiocesan Nothing More Beautiful program falls close to Pentecost. For the New Evangelization to flow from Nothing More Beautiful, it must be the work of the Holy Spirit.

God wants a robust relationship that lacks fear, is playful

Fr. Ron Rolheiser, omi

Some years ago, a woman shared this story at a workshop. She had a six-year-old son whom she had conscientiously schooled in prayer. Among other things, she made him kneel beside his bed every night and say aloud a number of prayers, ending with an invocation to "bless mummy, daddy, grandma and grandpa."

We know him from religious art – he is always shown as a dove. We know him from the catechism and from the New Testament story of his descent upon the disciples. He came upon them as fire that did not burn, as wind that did not destroy.

Open your mind and doors to the disabled

May 13, 2013

I'm often asked about how we can make our society more inclusive and accessible for the disabled. There are obvious physical barriers for those who have physical disabilities. Those normally take some engineering or construction thought.
