Fr. Ayodele Ayeni CsSP

Growing up a Protestant, in northern Nigeria, was difficult because it was not easy to know exactly what to believe as a Christian – the homilies depended on the pastor's intuition into the scriptural passage they chose.

The Catholic Church's opposition to the bullying of homosexuals is written into the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Homosexuals "must be treated with respect, compassion and sensitivity. Every sign of unjust discrimination in their regard should be avoided," the Catechism states (n. 2358).

It is only a few days ago that I stood in a narrow corridor of the catacombs of St. Callixtus at Rome. The air there is damp and cold, ceilings glisten with crystals of condensed moisture, brown tufa stone is stained with age. Dark walls are pierced with surprisingly slim, shadowy cavities which once housed bodies of Christians of the first ages, the ages of bloody persecutions alternating with brief periods of uneasy peace with the surrounding pagan world.

I read an article that when we find attractiveness in others, we should recognize and appreciate their attributes as gifts of God. I find the wife of one of our friend couples attractive in that we share professional occupations, similar backgrounds and dispositions but also physically.

In his column on Page 19, Father Ayo Ayeni contrasts the conventional thinking and life of our age with the wisdom of the Holy Spirit. The pursuit of wisdom, he says, leads one to communion and to understand love as sacrifice. The sinking into conventionality plants one in a blah existence, one lacking even in moral signposts.

A number of years ago, accompanied by an excellent Jesuit director, I did a 30-day retreat using the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. In the third week, there's a meditation on Jesus' agony in the garden. I did the meditation to the best of my ability and met with my director to discuss the result. He wasn't satisfied and asked me to repeat the exercise.
