Bob McKeon

February 3, 2014

Five years ago this month, Bishop Luc Bouchard of St. Paul, Alberta, issued his high profile pastoral statement, The Integrity of Creation and the Athabasca Oil Sands. Four months later, Bishop Murray Chatlain of Mackenzie-Fort Smith, downstream from the Alberta oilsands, issued a pastoral letter in support of the stance taken by Bouchard.

Prostitution flourishes when human body is degraded

Parliament should put a top priority on replacing the anti-prostitution laws that the Supreme Court last month ruled violate the Charter of Rights. The court ruled that current laws barring communication for the purpose of prostitution, living on the avails of prostitution and keeping a common bawdy house represent, in various ways, threats to the safety of prostitutes.

Ten books that met my taste last year

Fr. Ron Rolheiser, omi

January 20, 2014

De gustibus non est disputandum. That's a famous line from St. Augustine wherein he suggests that taste is subjective and that what one person fancies might not be to another person's liking. Under that canopy I would like to recommend the following books to you.

Five years ago, on Jan. 25, 2009, St. Paul Bishop Luc Bouchard issued perhaps the most controversial pastoral letter in the history of the Catholic Church in Alberta. Bouchard criticized the rapid development of the Athabasca oilsands in his diocese as sacrificing the integrity of God's creation for the sake of economic gain.

Lasha Morningstar

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity serves as an annual reminder that we ought to listen more than we speak. As Catholics, we trust that our Church is the guarantor of revealed religious truth.

Good morning fools and dead colleagues!

Dr. Gerry Turcotte

January 20, 2014

Recently a senior member of the university's legal firm sent an email to us. It began, "Hi Fools"! This is not an inspiring salutation first thing in the morning, and especially so from a lawyer working on a sensitive matter.

How do we determine the real prophets?

Sr. Louise Zdunich

January 20, 2014

Group Bible study (Isaiah) led me to wonder the following: What is a prophet? Do we have prophets among us today? Who are they and what is their message? How can we separate the wheat from the chaff?
