One of the biggest disgraces in the Catholic Church in Canada happened in post-Vatican II times when the Canadian Catholic bishops dissented on Pope Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae. Up to the present, this stance has not been revoked. The Canadian bishops left the use of contraception up to the consciences of couples.

The late founder of Human Life International, Benedictine Father Paul Marx, once said, "Abortion follows contraception like night follows day." It should be pointed out that some contraceptives such as the birth control pill kill the embryo within the mother's womb. This is a grave evil.

Eighty-six per cent of Catholic hierarchies around the world approved of Humanae Vitae; Canada and Germany were among the 14 per cent who dissented.

Interestingly, the American Catholic bishops backed Pope Paul VI on his encyclical. May Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of life, intercede for Canada and the Catholic Church that we may be more welcoming to life in all stages, from conception to natural death.

Editor's Note: The letter writer is perhaps unaware of the 2008 statement of the plenary assembly of the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops in which they endorsed Humanae Vitae in great detail and urged Canadian Catholics to deepen their understanding of Pope Paul's encyclical.

That statement can be found online at www.cccb.ca/site/images/stories/pdf/humanae_vitae_en.pdf.
