Pope John XXIII shocked the world with his council

On Jan. 25, 1959, a new pope shocked the world. Pope John XXIII, speaking to a small group of Roman cardinals following a liturgy to conclude the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, announced that he had decided to convene an ecumenical council.

Spider-Man weaves a theological web of intriguing themes

This past decade has seen a plethora of movies dealing with superheroes: the Batman films, The Green Lantern, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, etc. But the most popular – at least judging by box office receipts – has been the Spider-Man franchise. Since 2002, there have been four major movie adaptations of the Marvel Comics story of a kid who gets bitten by a spider, undergoes a stunning metamorphosis, and then "catches thieves just like flies."

Stopping health care for refugees could block sponsorships

Controversial changes in Canada's refugee laws and policies have been very much in the news this summer. Bill C-31, a bill making it more difficult for those escaping persecution in their home countries to gain refugee status in Canada, received royal assent and became law at the end of June.

I was dismayed by the question to Sister Louise Zdunich regarding Christ's wherabouts during his so-called "lost years" in the July 16 WCR. The question is irrelevant. His ministry was obviously intended to last only during his last three years.
