Vancouver – The effort to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide that was lost in Parliament in 2010, moved to the courts Nov. 14, but pro-life forces are fighting back.
On Nov. 14, in Vancouver, the B.C. Supreme Court began hearing arguments in Carter vs. Attorney General of Canada, that challenges Canada's laws against assisted suicide and euthanasia.

On Nov. 25, the 38,000 staff and students in the Edmonton Catholic School District will recognize Holodomor (Ukrainian Famine-Genocide) Memorial Day.
Holodomor remains the greatest mass murder of civilians undertaken during peace time. Despite this infamy, Holodomor is still a little known and little understood event.

EDMONTON – No matter how dreadful the crime, how appalling the sin, Doreen Trudeau remains convinced that Jesus' forgiveness is greater.
Trudeau, 66, is known in Edmonton for her work with seniors. She visits patients at various hospitals and care centres and takes them Communion. For 16 years she has been active with the Legion of Mary, participates in Bible study at St. Andrew's Parish, and loves spending time with her three adult children and two grandchildren.

EDMONTON – Just in time for the onset of winter, needy students in Slave Lake are the recipients of new, warm winter coats provided by the Knights of Columbus.
The Alberta-Northwest Territories Knights raised more than $19,000 from 34 councils across the jurisdiction to provide 150 coats to students in five elementary to junior high schools in the town that was ravaged by fire last May.

VANCOUVER – Although Canada has traditionally had a healthy relationship between Church and state, Catholics need to remain alert to protect religious freedom, says Vancouver Archbishop Michael Miller.
There is a secularist agenda that "basically wants to privatize religion and leave it restricted to the private sphere," Miller said in a telephone interview Nov. 10.
